The term “regime change operation” is often contentious and can carry different interpretations. For the purpose of this response, I will focus on the impacts of significant political changes in Pakistan, often influenced by both internal and external factors.
Pakistan has a history of political instability, with frequent changes in government, often accompanied by significant societal and economic repercussions. While direct evidence of external “regime change operations” might be difficult to pinpoint, there’s no doubt that foreign powers have, at times, played a role in shaping Pakistan’s political landscape.
However, the regime change operation that led to the ousting of Imran Khan’s government in Pakistan has had several significant effects on the country’s political, economic, and social landscape. Here are some of the key impacts:
Potential Effects of Regime Change Operations
The effects of regime change operations in Pakistan can be far-reaching and complex, impacting various facets of the country:
Political Effects
- Political Instability: The removal of Imran Khan led to political turmoil and uncertainty. The transition of power was marked by protests, legal battles, and political infighting.
- Strengthening of Opposition: The opposition parties, primarily the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), gained strength and united to form a coalition government.
- Military-Civil Relations: The relationship between the military and civilian government came under scrutiny. Speculations about the military’s role in the regime change operation raised questions about the balance of power in Pakistan.
- Public Sentiment: Imran Khan’s supporters felt disenfranchised and disillusioned, leading to mass protests and a significant divide in public opinion.
- Polarization: Regime change operation of 2022 lead to deep political divisions and societal polarization in Pakistan.
- Weakened State Institutions: Political instability along with direct facilitation of some state institutes for the regime change has weakened them, by making them less effective and less influential in providing essential services.
Economic Effects
- Economic Uncertainty: The political instability affected investor confidence, leading to volatility in the stock market and fluctuations in the Pakistani rupee.
- Policy Continuity: The new government faced challenges in maintaining continuity in economic policies, leading to delays in decision-making and implementation of economic reforms.
- International Relations: Changes in leadership affected Pakistan’s foreign relations, including its dealings with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other international bodies.
- Currency Devaluation: Instability can weaken the national currency, leading to inflation and increased cost of living.

- Security Challenges: Regime changes can create opportunities for extremist groups to gain influence.
- Human Rights Concerns: Political instability can lead to increased human rights abuses.
- Social Unrest: Protests and demonstrations can erupt, leading to civil disturbances. During the phases, Khan himself survived the deadliest of murder attack in Wazirabad but luckily he escaped and got injured by getting the bullet in his leg.
- Political Victimization: Imran Khan and his party PTI faced the worst political victimization and the worst fascism by the state and state institutes. As many of the political workers, party leaders and supporters were targeted through different and bogus cases. Khan also scored 200+ FIRs including cipher case, Toshakhana case, Al Qadir Trust case and Iddat case.
- Brain Drain: After the regime change operation, Pakistan faced the all time high brain drain as most of the skilled labor is fleeing from the country due to the political and social uncertainty. In 2022, around 0.8 million people left, and in 2023, this number approached 1 million. By the first six months of 2024 alone, the number has already reached 0.8 million, with predictions indicating it will double by the end of the year.
Foreign Policy Implications
- Altered regional balance: Changes in government has imbalanced Pakistan’s foreign policy priorities and alliances.
- Strained bilateral relations: Instability has damaged relations with key partners and allies, causing China to halt developments in Gawadar, the flagship project of the BRI.
Long-term Implications
- Democratic Processes: The events raised questions about the robustness of democratic processes in Pakistan, highlighting vulnerabilities in the political system.
- Governance Challenges: The new government faced the challenge of addressing the expectations of a divided populace while managing economic and administrative issues.
- Impact on Elections: The regime change operation set the stage for 2024 elections, in which the masses has shown their complete allegiance and support with Imran Khan despite of the electoral hurdles faced by PTI but unfortunately the verdict of masses neglected and a disputed government hold the charge whose fate is still unpredictable with the passage of time due to various factors
- Economic Revival: Due to regime change operation, economy is the most fatal part which is dented badly. As at the time of ouster of Khan the GDP of Pakistan was all time high in its history since independence, approaching to 6 but after that it declined to -0.6 for the fiscal year 2022-23 and varied between 3 in the fiscal year of 2023-24. While the GDP recovered due to IMF package plan as Pakistan was about to default economically.
Overall, the regime change operation that ousted Imran Khan’s government had wide-reaching effects, influencing Pakistan’s political dynamics, economic stability, and social fabric. Understanding the complex interplay of internal and external factors is crucial for analyzing the impact of these events on the country’s trajectory.
