Gaza War & Failure of Diplomacy
The longstanding Gaza War between Israelis and Palestinians took a different turn on October 7, 2023, when it escalated into what many describe as a genocide and apartheid by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, marked by violence, airstrikes, and rocket attacks.
Until the writing more than 35000+ has been martyred, thousands have been injured and missing, while leaving millions displaced in their own lands and no one is stopping that. Despite the continuous measures of diplomatic talks between Hamas (Representing Gaza) and Israel, mediated by global and regional powers but so far due to the hypocrisy and denial of Netanyahu, who aimed to cleanse the Palestinians from Gaza to capture the Gaza Strip due to it’s strategic position. But Diplomacy has repeatedly failed to bring a lasting resolution.
The United States, along with Qatar, UAE, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and others, is engaging in “quiet, intensive diplomacy” to end the violence. However, the US initially blocked a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire while approving billions in aid and providing military assistance. Later due to severe criticism forced US to support the ceasefire in Gaza.
Israel’s war on Gaza forced Gaza’s hospitals to collapse due to extensive airstrikes, power blackouts, sewage issues and deficiency of life saving drugs. Extreme poverty and high unemployment rates persist in Gaza due to the ongoing blockade, siege and occupation which has converted Gaza from Biggest Open Air Prison to the Biggest Open Air Graveyard.
For lasting peace, fundamental changes are needed on the ground. The failure of diplomacy underscores the complexity of the conflict. Efforts to find a peaceful resolution continue, but the situation remains tense and fragile. International diplomacy faces significant challenges in addressing the Gaza War due to historical complexities and geopolitical dynamics. Here are some key points:
The UN, responsible for ensuring world peace and security, has faced paralysis in addressing Gaza. The outdated mechanism of the Security Council’s right of veto hinders effective action which leaves UN as a puppet body in hands of global powers like US, UK and France. The Global South criticizes Western double standards in conflicts like Ukraine and Gaza.
The Global South is gaining prominence, shifting the balance of power as China and Russia are influencing the international politics. Nations like Brazil advocate for negotiated solutions (e.g., Lula da Silva’s efforts in Ukraine) and denounce violence in Gaza.
South Africa filed a case in the International Court of Justice against Netanyahu and Israel for their atrocities, with other nations backing South Africa’s stance. They are committed to arresting Netanyahu and addressing his heinous crimes.
The atrocities committed by Israel against unarmed Palestinians are prompting a global movement to boycott Israeli products and reconsider diplomatic, economic, and strategic ties with Israel. This international pressure aims to compel Israel to achieve peace in Gaza.
The US engages in intense diplomacy to contain the conflict and prevent further escalations as Israel finding itself in escalations with Iran and Lebanon. Efforts include brokering ceasefires and supporting regional stability.
The Gaza-Israel conflict has persisted for decades, and finding a resolution remains challenging.
The two-state solution proposes creating an independent State of Palestine alongside Israel. It aims to address Palestinian self-determination without undermining Palestinian and Israel’s sovereignty. However, achieving acceptable borders and mutual recognition remains difficult.
Diplomatic efforts have centred around realizing a two-state solution. Past negotiations, like the 2000 Camp David Summit, faced obstacles and led to the Second Intifada.
In 2022, support for a two-state solution was 33% among Palestinians, 34% among Israeli Jews, and 60% among Israeli Arabs, which has become evident now due to recent Israeli atrocities.
Deadlock Reasons
Lack of Clarity: Israel’s goals for the war are unclear, and this is making it hard to negotiate a peace settlement among the stake holders.
Divided Opinion: Israel’s political leaders are divided on how to end the war and have not reached a consensus on the best course of action.
Humanitarian Crisis: The war has led to a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with many civilians died and rest of them are living a miserable life with no access to basic human rights.
International pressure: The international community is pressurizing Israel to end the war, but Israel is resisting this pressure .
Hamas’s Demands: Hamas is demanding a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners, which Israel is resisting. In this scenario, Hamas and Palestinian leadership is justified due to the massacre done by the Israeli Defence Forces is absolutely criminal and unjustified with the masses.
Lack of Trust: There is a lack of trust between Israel and Hamas, and between Israel and the international community, which is making it hard to negotiate a peace settlement.
Regional Tensions: The war has caused regional tensions, with countries like Iran and Russia getting involved, making it harder to find a peaceful solution.
Despite the challenges persist, but the two-state vision endures as a potential path to peace. While the two-state solution faces hurdles, it remains a focal point for resolving the conflict.
In summary, international diplomacy must adapt to the 21st century’s realities and prioritize peace, aid, and cooperation to address the Gaza crisis.
