Description

The Ottoman Empire or Ottoman Caliphate was a Muslim empire that lasted from 1299 to 1922 and was ruled by Turks. In its heyday (16th-17th centuries), the empire was spread over three continents and covered most of southeastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The Great Empire was bounded on the west by the Strait of Gibraltar, on the east by the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf, and on the north by Austria, Slovakia, and Crimea (present-day Ukraine), and on the south by Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen. It had 29 provinces, in addition to the taxable areas of Moldova, Transylvania, and Wallachia.
